All of the babies I photograph win my heart. I love, love, love kids. Photographing them is my #1 favorite thing to do. When Mason's mommy, Melissa, called me last fall to get set up for a newborn photo shoot, everything was going along beautifully. She was due in late November, so we set a plan to touch base with a week to ten days from Mason's birth.
I talked to Melissa a couple days before she was due to be induced and she was excited and so ready to not be pregnant anymore. I knew what day she was scheduled for induction, so when I hadn't heard from her several days later, I reached out to her. Labor and delivery went smoothly, but Mason was in NICU.
During the next couple of months we stayed in touch. Mason continued to get stronger and was allowed to go home in January. The doctors had asked that they restrict Mason's exposure to the outside world, so we arranged for me to meet at their home a few days later for his newborn session.
Within moments of meeting Mason I was in love. He was the sweetest most angelic little boy I had ever met. He and I hit it off right away and got some very adorable pictures of him wide awake and staring straight at me. Melissa and I decided we wanted to try some newborn sleeping shots. This is where the fun began. Mason is the strongest willed baby I have ever known to fight falling asleep. He didn't cry or fuss at all. He just had no intention of closing those beautiful eyes. So after a bottle and a change I sat on the floor and rocked and sang to him for over an hour. Once asleep, he gave me a solid 15 minutes to get any sleeping shots. It's amazing how quickly you can move when you know your time is limited.
A few weeks later, Melissa asked me if I would meet them at their home again for another set of photos of Mason. Of course I immediately said yes. Spending time with this sweet boy is one of the monumental joys of my job. We had his swing as part of our arsenal this time so he didn't have a chance and fell asleep quite quickly. We got another set of amazing photos.
I have kept in touch with Melissa and check in to see how Mason is doing on a regular basis. Mason has some challenges and will be needing a few surgeries before his first birthday. He and his mommy are two of the most amazing and strongest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. My photography business has opened the door for me to meet some amazing people and be able to call them friends. I hope that I am always a part of Mason's life in some way.
Here are a couple adorable shots from our session. I am looking forward to his 6 month photos and again for his 1 year where I plan to have a huge celebration for him.
